Diagnosis
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on the person as a whole. If you suffer from, for instance, insomnia, the Chinese doctor will examine the whole body. For all parts of the body are interdependent and influence each other. A treatment plan can only be produced after a proper diagnosis. The TCM doctor will pay attention to a number of items as listed below.

Complexion
The doctor will observe the complexion of a patient.

  • A red face, for instance, may indicate fever
  • A yellow face may indicate jaundice
  • A white complexion often indicates aneamia of Qi deficiency
  • A purple complexion results from a lack of oxigen, tormenting pains and a stagnated circulation

Posture and build
The doctor also observes the posture and build of a patient. An obese person has a chronic Qi deficiency and an invasion of Mucus and Damp. A person who is lean, may suffer from "Hyperactive Heat due to Deficient Yin". Paralysis indicate Deficient Qi and Blood, and disharmonies with the different organs.

Tongue
The tongue tells us much about the body and as such in TCM it is the main tool to get a good diagnosis. Normally the tongue is supple and pink with a clear, white coating. Disharmonies are reflected in the tongue's colour, size and coating. If the fur on the tongue looks yellowish, for instance, it often indicates chronic indigestion.

Pulse
The pulse also provides a lot of information. In TCM the pulse is connected to the Zang Fu organs. On each wrist there are three positions where you can detect a pulse. The doctor feels the condition and the balance of the organs. Besides, the doctor also observes the quality of the pulse. A gliding pulse, for instance, often indicates digestive problems and an irregular pluse indicates possible heart problems.

Questions
The doctor may also ask questions about your health in general, food and drink, any past diseases, and the use of any medicines.
